A few weeks on from the close of London Fashion Week and I thought it might be nice to select a couple of my favourite catwalk beauty trends to try and see how they might work in ‘real life’ away from the ‘frow’ and all the palava of Fashion Week. I picked out two trends to try – the bold lip from Topshop and the glitter lined brow from Giammbatista Valli.
First up is the Topshop look which featured alongside a nude-lip version too and paired with a heavily black-lined eye. The colour really stood out to me and was one I wanted to try straight away. This is the Topshop Beauty Lipstick in ‘Straight Ace’ * and it’s an in your face purple shade that is anything but subtle. On the catwalk it was worn with more of a matte finish, but I wore it with a balm under neath to give it a bit of extra shine, purely because my lips are a bit dry and I didn’t want it to ruin the effect. I skipped the heavy liner and instead went for just a few coats of black mascara and nude lids. Keeping it simple to pair with such a bold colour.
Because it’s such a bold shade I paired it with liner as it’s not one you want to just wing it and apply on the bus with. I used Urban Decay Firebird as it’s a close-enough bright magenta colour. I also over-lined the lips a little to really make the lips the focus. I have to say I LOVE this shade and will be reaching for it for nights out…although wearing it in the day might be a long shot, purely because a colour like this is pretty high maintenance! But when matched with lashes instead of the bold liner I think it’s pretty wearable… what do you reckon? Would you wear a bold lip like this?
Then I thought I’d go a little more out of my comfort zone and give the whole ‘glitter lined brow’ a go. This look was created by Val Garland for the Giambattista Valli show and of course, the catwalk version was a lot bolder than what I created here. I wanted to make it just a subtle hint of sparkle and so I reached for an Urban Decay glitter liner * and an Estee Lauder liquid liner * I have in a pewter shade and used them both to underline the narrow side of the brow. I wanted just that hint of sparkle, sort of like an alternative to a brow bone highlight. Whilst this was for the AW Catwalks (16/17) I think this is a look that would be pretty to wear for Summer this year. Just think beach party or festival beauty and suddenly a slick of glitter brow doesn’t seem quite so out-there. Because I was adding that touch of sparkle I went simple on everything else with a pinky nude lip and nude eyes.
I’m not normally one to break from the day to day habit of my go-to nude make-up favourites so I liked using this as a way to switch things up a bit and try something new. Let me know what you think and if you maybe want to see some more catwalk or other beauty trends being tried and made as wearable as possible… I guess if it can be adapted to the point I wear them then it has to be pretty wearable?!
Bring on the Topshop bold lips and the Giambattista Valli glitter brow. It’s fun to try something different from time to time!
